Valencia, situated on the east coast of Spain, is the third-largest
city after Madrid and Barcelona, with around 1 Million
inhabitants. The airport is located 10 km from the city centre.
It was founded as a Roman colony in 138 BC and in 714 AD Moroccan
and Arab Moors occupied the city, introducing their language, religion
and customs.
Its historic centre is one of the largest in Spain, with a wealth of
ancient monuments, churches and palaces. Enjoy all Spain's third
city has to offer whilst also relaxing in its many central green
parks or at the beach, a short metro ride or cycle away. Due to its
long history, this is a city with numerous celebrations and
traditions, such as Fallas a week-long festival in March celebrating
the arrival of Spring where everything bad is burnt and reborn from
the ashes to welcome a new season. The city comes to life with 800
"ninot" figures on the streets bursting with humour, satire and
incredible design. A programme of processions, firework displays and
the final midnight burning of the ninots is not to be missed - truly
a unique Spanish experience!
Valencia is a rich mixture of art, music, literature, gastronomy,
architecture with over 50 cultural centres, museums, galleries and
historical buildings. From the art masterpieces of Joaquín Sorolla,
the literature of Blasco Ibáñez, the graphic novels of Paco Roca,
the futuristic architecture of Santiago Calatrava – the city caters
to all tastes.
